Mario first appeared in the game of Donkey Kong as a plumber named Jumpman.
He now normally wears blue overalls on top of a red shirt, but he originally wore red overalls on top of a blue shirt like in Donkey Kong.
Originally, he had to rescue his girlfriend Pauline in Donkey Kong from DK. Pauline did not last long as a character and was replaced by Princess Peach.
